Fares and Charter Flights

It's not just low-cost carriers that offer cheap deals. Several standard fare old-school "flag-carrier" airlines regularly offer surprisingly good fares.

Most regular-fare European airlines have fare sales several times every year. Occasionally these fares turn up cheaper intra-European fares than those offered by average low-cost airlines fares. (Also note that there are some amazing transatlantic fares into Europe from North America on regular-fare airlines at particular times of year.)

KLM's "Take Off Fares" advertise the airline's cheapest fares. These fares include taxes and other charges and can be quite low. "Take Off Fares" are for worldwide travel, and they are exclusively meant for travel out of Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Maastricht, and Rotterdam. Note that the lowest fares offer only a fraction of the frequent flyer miles you would receive at a full fare; furthermore, they are not flexible.

Charter Airlines

Charter airlines also offer a way to save big. Many charter package holiday outfits will sell some seats on their airplanes to independent actors—that is, travelers who are not taking part in a package vacation. These seats can be quite inexpensive. The downside is that charter airline routes are usually weekly versus daily, and tend to be inflexible when it comes to changing tickets.

The situation is made more complicated by the fact that at least one airline we profile (Transavia, the KLM-Air France low-cost airline) fills a huge proportion of its seats with people on one or another package holiday.

We include the following charter (or partial charter) airlines in our listings: BritishJET, Condor, Corendon, Jetairfly, Monarch, SunExpress, Thomas Cook Belgium, Thomsonfly, and TUIfly.

Note also that while some of the charter airlines we profile (Condor and TUIfly provide the best examples) have among the most impressive route maps around, many of the routes they fly are limited to extremely tiny seasonal windows. If you see the "seasonal" icon next to a route flown by a charter airline, there's a very good chance that you'll come up empty for a specific week or month of travel.

Flights on charter airlines tend to be more expensive than those on low-cost carriers, though there are many great deals to be found. You may find that you need to do quite a bit more exploring to find the lowest charter airline fares.

Dubai airport accident kills five

Five building labourers have been killed and 12 injured in an accident at a construction site at Dubai airport.
A reinforcement cage that was holding up a new wall that was being built collapsed, bringing down the wall and trapping workers under it.
The accident happened during the building of a new third terminal, civil aviation authorities said.
The airport - one of the world's busiest and fastest-growing - is being expanded at a cost of $4.1bn.
"The wall fell down, and we all ran to help, but there wasn't anything we could do,"one worker, Daljinder Singh, told the Associated Press news agency.
The injured workers were taken to two hospitals.
But there has been no disruption to flights.

London Gatwick Airport launches new free spray tan scheme

Source: http://www.gatwickairport.com

THOUSANDS of Brits are heading off on their summer holiday in fear of flashing their fair flesh, reveals new research today.
Brits biggest holiday hate is baring their lilywhite skin, as almost one third (32 per cent) admit they dread showing off their pasty complexion. The research from London Gatwick Airport launches the airport’s new summer initiative ‘Gatwick Glow’ which will offer travellers complementary spray tans before they fly.

Being bronzed when hitting the sand is clearly more important than we think with holiday makers feeling more comfortable revealing their cellulite (22 per cent) and wobbly bellies (22 per cent) than their winter-white skin.
Going away with a pre-existing glow could be the way to go; over half (56 per cent) claim having a pre-bronzed-bod would give them more confidence on their first day.

And men are proving vainer than ever, as they fear exposing their tanless skin more than women when heading for sunnier shores, with close to four in 10 (36 per cent) admitting it’s their top vacation vex compared to 29 per cent of females.
Despite so many saying it would give them a much needed self-esteem boost on the beach, over eight in 10 (82 per cent) have never had a spray tan before jetting abroad – needless to say, Brits aren’t doing much to help their self-confidence on the beach.
